Black Rock-High Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area

Travel to the Black Rock-High Emigrant Trails Conservation Area and see the longest intact segments of the California and Oregon emigrant trails. This area is composed of about 120 miles of emigrant trails from Rye Patch Reservoir in Pershing County, Nevada to the narrow gorge of High Rock Canyon in North West Washoe County, Nevada. Several trails wind through this area, and they are accessed by over 800 miles of roads and 33 access routes. The BLM manages this area with the goal of maintaining the primitive feel of this historical place.

Emigrant trails

The Applegate-Lassen and Nobles emigrant trails are the prime focus of the Black Rock-High Emigrant trails Conservation Area. The trails were used during the mid to late 1800s and historic inscriptions and wagon ruts made by pioneers are still seen today. These areas are protected from visitors.

Wilderness

The Black Rock Playa is a very large flat, ancient lake bed that was once Lake Lahontan. Due to its large flat surface several popular events routinely happen here, such as the setting of the world land speed record in 1997. Amateur rocketry clubs use it to set world altitude records, and it is the sight of the Burning Man Festival. The area is also known for its paleontology, wildlife, wild horses, hot springs and recreation.

Travel restrictions

Black Rock-High Emigrant trails Conservation Area is a quiet, remote area. While traveling through this area, it is possible to never see another person or vehicle. The winters in the high desert are cold, long and wet. The road through the High Rock Canyon is closed every winter to early spring from the mouth of High Rock Canyon to five miles south of Stevens Camp. This is to protect the emigrant trail from damage and not disturb nesting raptors and lambing bighorn sheep. The only access to this area in a four wheel drive vehicle. Always carry extra gas, water, food and warm clothing when visiting.

Both outside enthusiasts and history buffs should not miss a trip to the Black Rock-High Emigrant trails Conservation Area. Old pioneer cabins are available in some areas for overnight use or set up a primitive camp. Just remember to respect private property and haul out trash.
