Bloody Shins Trail

The first trail developed in the Winnemucca Mountain Bike Trail System is the Bloody Shins Trail. The name gives a good description for this challenging trail. Located on BLM land in Humboldt County, Nevada, the trail head has parking for both cars and trailers. There is no water available for human consumption or for livestock. There are three levels of track that all promise a great workout and great views.
Location
The trail is easily reached by both residents and out-of-towners, and starts at the edge of the east side of the town of Winnemucca. Head east to East Winnemucca Blvd. and turn right 0.7 miles to Highland Ave. Turn right on Highland Ave. and continue for 0.3 miles to Kluncy Canyon Rd. Turn left, and go 1 mile to the trail head.
Track
The clearly marked, Bloody Shins Trail runs seven to 17 hard, grueling miles and is divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced grades. The track has both double and single trails. The beginner trail starts at 4,570 feet elevation, and reaches a top height of 4,820 feet. This track is an enjoyable and scenic ride. The intermediate track has a 1,000 foot rise along its 12 mile trail. The advanced trail is a 17 mile round trip and climbs to 5,200 feet. It is best used by people who want to feel totally alive and are up for an arduous challenge.
Though the intention of this trail is for mountain bikers, it is also enjoyed by hikers, runners, horseback riders and nature lovers. The terrain is beautiful with great views of the surrounding mountain ranges and wildlife.
