Carlin Canyon Historical Wayside

A trip down the Carlin Canyon historical wayside is a delightful way to view the unique rock formations, as well as experience the history of the Carlin, Nevada area. The wayside is accessible via automobile, bike and even by foot.

Geologic history

Carlin Canyon is home to unique geographic conditions resulting in distinct layers of vertical conglomerate. Layers from the Mississippian Period of 300 million years ago are driven through, revealing more recent layers from the Pennsylvanian Period. Both early and late Paleolithic limestone sheets hug the sides of the canyon, and the historical wayside provides a stunning look into the Earth's history of mountain-building and erosion. The canyon was shaped by the once mighty Humbolt River, which is now a quiet stream. In fact, the first voyagers through the wayside traveled over water, not land.

Cultural History

The Carlin Canyon historical wayside was first trekked through by Native Americans. In 1828, travelers from the Hudson's Bay Company were the first people of European descent to traverse the canyon, though many more eventually followed in covered wagons. The Central Pacific Railroad, which had a terminal in Carlin, brought steam engines through the rocky pass, along with its builders, Chinese emigrants, who brought a unique culture to the area as early as 1868. Finally, in 1913, Nevada Route 1 welcomed automobiles into the canyon. Today, you can take Interstate 80 to view the canyon, or you can take Interstate 40 in order to drive right on through. The Carlin Canyon historical wayside is one of the few passes of Interstate 40 still in use.

Along the Carlin Canyon historical wayside, tourists can stop at historical markers to rest, take photos and educate themselves about the unique geologic, industrial and cultural history of the area. It is certainly a day trip unlike any other, and one that is sure to bring about new experiences.
