Desert colors and creatures
The Gold Butte Back Country Byway is famous for its vistas of glowing red and white sandstone. While exploring the colorful scenery by foot, you might stumble upon unique wildlife and vegetation. Keep a watch out for desert tortoises, bighorn sheep, wild burros or even mountain lions! Create special memories when you visit the fantastic grove of Joshua trees, and climb the Muddy and Virgin mountains.
A slice of desert history
The tiny town of Gold Butte was originally the home of prospectors, who mined for zinc, copper, gold and lead. Take a tour, and get a fascinating glimpse into what life was like for miners in the early 1900s. If you are interested in Native American history, look at the petroglyphs.
Come prepared
A significant portion of the byway winds through rugged, wild terrain. You are exploring a desert, so bring food and water supplies with you on your journey. As the byway is a mix of gravel, dirt and paved road, it is also highly recommended that you travel in a four-wheel drive vehicle. Before you embark, fill up your tank with gas.
The Gold Butte Back Country Byway is a gateway to fun, adventure and beauty! The byway promises you and your family a bounty of pleasurable sights and activities to enrich your memories for years to come.
