Pony Express National Historic Trail

Any history buff knows the historical significance of the Pony Express. More than 150 years before email existed, the Pony Express mail service transported small packages, letters and postcards from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California and anywhere in between. Though the Pony Express only operated for about a year and a half, it played an important part in our country's development. In commemoration of the Pony Express, the United States Department of Interior's National Park Service designated the Pony Express National Historic Trail. Travelling through California, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, visiting the Pony Express National Historic Trail is an exciting and fun outdoor activity for people of all ages.
Things to do on the trail
There are many ways to enjoy the Pony Express National Historic Trail. Though it has the word trail in its name, the Pony Express National Historic Trail is not a standard hiking trail. Since it is 1,800 miles long, many parts of the trail are located on privately owned land. At various points throughout the trail there are camping grounds to accommodate both tents and RVs. A few lengthy hiking segments are available, for the true outdoor adventurer. There are also numerous short hikes that end in trail ruts or historic routes. For those interested in US history, visit one of the many museums scattered throughout the trail. Segments of the trail in Nevada may not have every single attraction available, but many are easily accessible from the state.
