Washoe Lake State Park

Washoe Lake State Park is located in the Washoe Valley just east of Lake Tahoe and between Carson City and Reno on U.S. Route 395. This state park is famous for its sweeping breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada and Carson Range. Because of its elevation and high winds, the park is the perfect setting for windsurfing. Other activities include bird watching, nature study, hiking, horseback riding and water sports like water skiing, jet skiing, fishing and catamaran sailing.
History
The Washoe were the first known people to inhabit the area around what is now known as Washoe Lake. In 1859, silver brought settlers to the area, and with them came various trades necessary to remove the silver like logging and trading. Finally, the Virginia and Truckee Railroad was built in the area in 1872. In 1977, the area was deemed a state park, and although cities seem to creep ever closer to its boundaries, the status keeps the area development-free.
