Wild Horse State Recreation Area

Wild Horse State Recreation Area is a wonderful place to park and visit when staying in the Wild Horse region of Nevada. This park has a lot to offer for both children and adults, and the view alone is worth the drive.

Park history

Wild Horse reservoir is named after the horses that once roamed the area. The horses were mostly driven out by ranching, but they are still seen in the Owyhee Desert region. The original reservoir was constructed in 1937, but it was expanded and doubled in size in 1969. It can now hold over 73,000 acre-feet of water. The surrounding region is rich in aspen trees, which were logged and harvested at various times throughout the region's history.

Weather

The weather is very moderate during the summer months, so this is when most people choose to visit. The winter months bring plenty of snow and temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.

Visitors to the park are charged a per-day fee and have access to boating and camping amenities. Centrally located showers and water spigots are available for use during most months. Many visitors utilize the picnic area, which has a great view of the water. Hunting and fishing are the most common activities in the park, but skiing is prevalent in the winter.
