Wilson Canyon Recreation Area

For wildlife viewing, fishing or hiking, take a scenic drive through the Wilson Canyon Recreation Area. Located 14 miles south of Yerington, Nevada, on NV 339/208 along the west fork of the Walker River, Wilson Canyon is a great spot for weekend camping and off-highway vehicle use.

Camping

Because of the popularity of Wilson Canyon, the Bureau of Land management has erected fences and signs along the river. Fisherman and hikers can still access the river, but camping and off-highway vehicle use is restricted outside the fence. Camping is primitive, but there are some picnic tables, bathroom facilities and trash receptacles provided. The camping fee is $4.00. Check with the BLM for current fire restrictions.

Fishing

The Nevada Division of Wildlife stocks the west fork of the Walker River with rainbow trout. Anglers enjoy both fly fishing and pole fishing. Wilson Canyon is a very narrow area with limited space to park. Get there early on a weekend for a good spot or try fishing mid-week.

Scenic Drive

At one end of Wilson Canyon is Mason Valley. Mason is a beautiful, serene farm community bordered on the east by high desert mountains. On the east side of the canyon is Smith Valley, another small farm community at the base of a steep mountain range. Once in Wilson Canyon, enjoy the river and the steep rock canyon walls. Sightings of white-throated swifts, cliff swallows, rock wrens and raptors are commonly seen among the rocks.

For fishing, camping or a relaxing drive and picnic lunch, Wilson Canyon Recreation Area is a must-see destination. Originally the Copper Belt Railroad ran through this windy, narrow canyon. Today, outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds enjoy the beauty of this Nevada river area.
